Many people who traveled
through Arizona after the
Mexican - American War
were on their way to the
California gold fields.

The military began arriving
in Arizona and in 1849
Camp Calhoun was
established. A year later its
name was changed to
Camp Independence, and in
1851 it was abandoned as
a military camp.
